Cellvibrio japonicus is a Gram-negative bacterium of biotechnological importance, specifically for the number of carbohydrate active enzymes it produces. While the bacterium has a robust carbohydrate utilization capacity, there are several related short-chain oligosaccharides that the type strain (Ueda107) cannot use as a nutrient source.
