Vibrio cholerae has caused six historical pandemics of cholera. The seventh cholera pandemic, 7P, began in the 1960's and continues to this day. 7P is caused by serovar O1/O139 V. cholerae of the El Tor biotype (dubbed 7PET). Those V. cholerae that do not belong to the 7PET lineage can also cause diarrhoeal disease, but appear to lack the ability to cause international cholera pandemics. In this project, we have sequenced historically and scientifically important Vibrio cholerae using long- and short-read technologies.
