Burkholderia pseudomallei is a soil organism found in many parts of the world. Through direct contact with contaminated soil/water, humans acquire infection and develop melioidosis. The disease, ofiten fatal, display broad clinical manifestations, with different disease patterns being reported. Little is known about factors influencing the disease outcomes and its geographical signatures. We hypothesise that bacterial genetics might contribute to the disease outcomes in that specific factors might have an impact on acquisition, disease manifestations and severity. By combining this newly sequenced collection and the existing collection, we propose to mine the genomes for geneitc factors that potentially facilitate disease development and the specificity factor that influence the patterns of clinical manifestations. Ultimately, a better understanding of bacterial disease-causing factors will aid a control of melioidosis. This data is part of a pre-publication release.
