Environmentally-transmitted symbiotic bacteria must often balance the selective pressures of host specificity and abiotic fluctuations from their surroundings. Here, we investigate the genetic basis of phenotypic adaptation to these challenges via comparative genomics. Genomes of four strains of Vibrio fischeri isolated from four different squid species living in varying temperature and salinity environments as well as one free-living Vibrio were sequenced.
