This study compared the performance of shotgun metagenomics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing for the etiological diagnosis of bacterial infection in clinical practice. The metagenomics method was more sensitive and specific than the 16S method and identified bacteria at the species level in 90.3% versus 50.0% of positive samples, respectively (p<0.01).
