Rhinoceromics

Experiment: Fecal samples were collected from black rhinoceroses every two months from five European zoological institutions for one year. The composition of the microbiome, mycobiome, and plant-based residues was measured by sequencing resp. 16S rRNA, ITS, and matK biomarkers from every fecal sample. Additionally, a questionnaire was sent out to the institutions regarding health status (symptoms of disorder, etc) and information concerning the composition of the diet. The study covered five male and seven female rhinoceroses. On top of the microbiome, mycobiome, and plant-based residues inflammation, metabolic and iron status were measured.
