Diversity of microbial eukaryotes in four East-African Great Lakes

We investigate the community composition of small eukaryotes (< 5 µm) of 4 African lakes by metabarcoding sequencing the V4 region of 18S rRNA gene using Roche 454. We sampled in the pelagic zone of Kivu, Edward, Albert and Victoria lakes. Moreover, in the meromictic Lake Kivu, one of the largest CH4 reservoirs, two stations (Gisenyi and Ishungu) was sampled over vertical profiles.

Rolling in the deep: soil denitrifiers and microbial communities trigged by long-term fertilization

In this study, 0 - 10.5 m soil samples were taken below experimental plots where N-fertilizer was applied for nearly 20 years under wheat-maize double cropping in the North China Plain (NCP). N-fertilizer application rates of 0 (N0) and 600 kg N ha-1yr-1 (N600) were applied to different plots. Multidisciplinary approaches were employed to profile the vertical distribution of denitrifer genes and soil microbial communities responding to long-term N fertilization.
