The environmental microbiota in aquaculture is important for health of farming animals. Povidone iodine (PVP-I) is one of the most commonly used chemical disinfectant in Chinese aquaculture, but its effect on the microbiota of the aquaculture environment is poorly understood. Therefore, we samplinged 1 h before, 1 h and 48 h after using different concentrations (0.3, 0.6, 1.2 mg/L) of PVP-I, and analyzed the changes in the microbiota using 16 S high-throughput sequencing technology. We found the diversity of microbiota increased and the simpson index decreased significantly; the abundance of Escherichia coli, Acinetobacter johnsonii and Acinetobacter junii decreased significantly. In addition, the potential pathogenicity of the microbiota was significantly decreased in 0.6 mg/L PVP-I groups, and the oxygen production capacity and metabolism capacity of the microbiota for ammonia nitrogen were significantly increased. Conversely, there was no significantly changes in microbiota after using 0.3 mg/L and 1.2 mg/L PVP-I. In summary, we concluded 0.6 mg/L povidone iodine had significant beneficial effects on the microbiota.
