The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a major parasite of livestock and other warm-blooded animals in the western hemisphere. It historically ranged from the southern US, through Central America, and much of South America and the Caribbean. It has since been eradicated from the US, and through Central America down to the Panama -Colombian border where a permanent quarantine zone is maintained. Currently eradicated areas benefit from an estimated $1.3 billion annually. However, outbreaks such as occurred in Florida in 2016, do occur in eradicated areas and a database for determining the source of outbreaks would be beneficial.
