More...In this study, the antibacterial activity of S. mussotii extract to ESBLs-producing E. coli was determined. The inhibition and eradication effects of S. mussotii extract on the biofilms of ESBLs-producing E. coli were explored by crystal violet staining, and further confirmed by confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicated that S. mussotii extract exhibited strong antibacterial activity. The effects on biofilm of ESBLs-producing E. coli were significant with the inhibition rate of 27.8%-75% at MIC, and the eradication rate of 15.3%-61.6% at MIC. CLSM images showed that the biofilm became thinner as the ESBLs-producing E. coli isolate exposed to S. mussotii extract with a concentration-dependent manner from 1/4 MIC to MIC compared with the untreated isolates. SEM images indicated that S. mussotii extract at 1/2 MIC and MIC concentrations can evidently inhibit the biofilm formation or distort the preformed biofilms, and obstruct the adhesion of the isolates. The effect of S. mussotii highlights its potential against ESBLs-producing E. coli, inhibit biofilm formation and eradicate mature biofilms of ESBLs-producing E. coli.
