This study aims to assemble two Atribacteria (newly classified bacterial candidate phylum formerly referred to as "OP9" and “JS1”) genomes from metagenomic libraries from three methane-rich deep-subsurface sediment samples collected during IODP Expedition 318, and to elucidate the carbon metabolic pathways of these organisms. This study will define the metabolic diversity of a major group of deep sediment bacteria (Atribacteria), and expanding the knowledge of subsurface carbon cycling to understudied high-latitude settings.
