The lesser electric ray (Narcine bancroftii) is a species of numbfish in the family Narcinidae found on the western coastal fringes of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It is a small slow-moving fish, living in the surf zone of sandy or muddy beaches (from Wikipedia entry). This sample of a male individual found in Apalachee Bay near Panacea, Florida, was procured by Gavin Naylor at Gulf Specimens Lab to generate a high-quality reference genome for the Vertebrate Genomes Project (VGP).
