Synonymy (Leucoagaricus meleagris)
Leucoagaricus meleagris was originally described by Sowerby in 1798. It was later transfered to Leucoagaricus (Singer, Lilloa 22: 422, 1952). Then in 1988 it was transferred to Leucocoprinus (Zschieschang, Mykologisches Mitteilungsblatt 31: 5, 1988). A recent study of the Agaricaceae (Vellinga 2004) has shown that neither Leucoagaricus nor Leucocoprinus are monophyletic but together, along with Sericeomyces form a monophyletic grouping. Vellinga found Leucoagaricus meleagris in this large clade containing Leucoagaricus, Leucocoprinus, and Sericeomyces and sister to Leucoagaricus americanus.
