Comments and References:

Osteichthyes is the formal name that has been used previously for the group referred to as Euteleostomi or "bony vertebrates." However, the term Osteichthyes has historically been used also in a quite different sense referring to a much smaller subset ofbony vertebrates including only organisms with a fish-like phenotype: Actinopterygii (ray-finned fishes), Coelacanthiformes (with the single extant genus Latimeria), and Dipnoi (lungfishes). We follow Nelson (1994) [Fishes of the World. Third edition. John Wiley and Sons, NY] by using the formal name Euteleostomi for this node in the taxonomic tree.
