It catalyzes both the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of HPr and its dephosphorylation by phosphorolysis. PEPCK and the C-terminal catalytic domain of HprK/P are structurally similar with conserved active site residues suggesting that these two phosphotransferases have related functions.
