Aldo-keto reductase (AKR) superfamily; Aldo-keto reductases (AKRs) are a superfamily of soluble NAD(P)(H) oxidoreductases whose chief purpose is to reduce aldehydes and ketones to primary and secondary alcohols. AKRs are present in all phyla and are of importance in both health and industrial applications. Members have very distinct functions and include the prokaryotic 2,5-diketo-D-gluconic acid reductases and beta-keto ester reductases, the eukaryotic aldose reductases, aldehyde reductases, hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases, steroid 5beta-reductases, potassium channel beta-subunits, and aflatoxin aldehyde reductases, among others.

AKR3G family of aldo-keto reductase (AKR); Synechocystis sp. aldo/keto reductase slr0942 is a founding member of aldo-keto reductase family 3 member G1 (AKR3G1). It is an aldo/keto reductase that catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of aldehyde- and ketone-groups of different classes of carbonyl compounds to the corresponding alcohols.

AKR5A family of aldo-keto reductase (AKR); Prostaglandin F2-alpha synthase (PGFS) from Leishmania major and Trypanosoma brucei are founding members of aldo-keto reductase family 5 member A1 (AKR5A1) and A2 (AKR5A2), respectively. PGFS, also called 9,11-endoperoxide prostaglandin H2 reductase, catalyzes the NADP-dependent formation of prostaglandin F2-alpha from prostaglandin H2. It has also aldo/ketoreductase activity toward the synthetic substrates 9,10-phenanthrenequinone and p-nitrobenzaldehyde.
