It has NADPH-dependent aldehyde reductase activity towards 2-carboxybenzaldehyde, 2-nitrobenzaldehyde and pyridine-2-aldehyde (in vitro). AKR7A2, AKR7A3 (also called AFB1 aldehyde reductase 2 or AFB1-AR 2), and AKR7A4 (also called AFB1 aldehyde reductase 3, or AFB1-AR 3, or aldoketoreductase 7-like), may be involved in protection of liver against the toxic and carcinogenic effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), a potent hepatocarcinogen. They can reduce the dialdehyde protein-binding form of AFB1 to the non-binding AFB1 dialcohol.

AKR2E family of aldo-keto reductase (AKR); Bombyx mori 3-dehydroecdysone reductase is a founding member of aldo-keto reductase family 2 member E4 (AKR2E4). It is a NADP-dependent oxidoreductase with high 3-dehydroecdysone reductase activity. It may play a role in the regulation of molting and has lower activity with phenylglyoxal and isatin (in vitro). This family also includes 3-dehydroecdysone 3b-reductase from Spodoptera littoralis and Trichoplusia ni, DL-glyceraldehyde reductase from Drosophila melanogaster, aldo-keto reductase from Bombyx mori, which correspond to aldo-keto reductase family 2 member E1, E2, E3 and E5 (AKR2E1/2/3/5), respectively.

ALR (EC 1.1.1.21), also called AR, aldehyde reductase, or polyol dehydrogenase (NADP(+)), is a cytosolic NADPH-dependent oxidoreductase that catalyzes the reduction of a variety of aldehydes and carbonyls, including monosaccharides. Both DpAR1 and DpAR2 reduce the ketone group of steroid structures. They may be involved in plant steroid metabolism in general and in cardenolide biosynthesis in particular. Plant aldo-keto reductases of the AKR4C subfamily play key roles during stress and are attractive targets for developing stress-tolerant crops.
