They are DEAD-like helicases belonging to superfamily (SF)2, a diverse family of proteins involved in ATP-dependent RNA or DNA unwinding. Similar to SF1 helicases, SF2 helicases do not form toroidal structures like SF3-6 helicases. Their helicase core consists of two similar protein domains that resemble the fold of the recombination protein RecA. This model describes the C-terminal domain, also called HelicC.

It regulates polymerase II transcription and is also required for efficient transcription by RNA polymerase I, and more specifically the polymerase I transcription termination step. It is not only involved in transcription-related chromatin-remodeling, but also required to maintain a specific chromatin configuration across the genome. CHD1 is also associated with histone deacetylase (HDAC) activity. It is a member of the DEAD-like helicase superfamily, a diverse family of proteins involved in ATP-dependent RNA or DNA unwinding. Histone deacetylation gives a tag for epigenetic repression and plays an important role in transcriptional regulation, cell cycle progression and developmental events.
