Small acid-soluble spore protein K family; This family consists of the small acid-soluble spore proteins (SASP) belonging to the K type (sspK). The sspK are unique to the spores of Bacillus subtilis and are expressed only in the forespore compartment of sporulating cells of this organizm. The sspK gene is monocistronic and transcription is primarily by the RNA polymerase with the forespore-specific sigma factor, sigma-G. Mutation deleting sspK results in loss of SspK from the spore but had no discernible effect on sporulation, spore properties or spore germination.
