TorT-like proteins, a periplasmic binding protein family that activates induction of the Tor respiratory system upon trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) electron-acceptor binding in bacteria; TorT-like proteins, a periplasmic binding protein family that activates induction of the Tor respiratory system upon trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) electron-acceptor binding in bacteria. The Tor respiratory system is consists of three proteins (TorC, TorA, and TorD) and is induced in the presence of TMAO. The TMAO control is tightly regulated by three proteins: TorS, TorT, and TorR. Thus, the disruption of any of these proteins can abolish the Tor respiratory induction. TorT shares homology with the sugar-binding domain of the type 1 periplasmic binding proteins. The members of TorT-like family bind TMAO or related compounds and are predicted to be involved in signal transduction and/or substrate transport.
