show Abstracthide AbstractSpider silks are the toughest known biomaterials, yet are extensible and virtually invisible to the immune system, and thus have revolutionary potential for medicine and industry. The golden orb-weaver spider, Nephila clavipes, produces a diverse repertoire of silks and is extensively studied for understanding silk biology. We present here the first annotated genome for any orb-weaving spider. We also provide 17 de novo assembled transcriptomes from a range of tissues including individual silk glands, as well as 28 sequences from the spidroin gene family assembled from long single molecule real-time sequencing reads.
