  • sigma factors are initiation factors that promote the attachment of RNA polymerase to specific initiation sites and are then released; sigma 54 factor is responsible for the expression of enzymes involved in nitrogen assimilation and metabolism; the rhizobia often have 2 copies of this sigma factor; in Rhizobium etli RpoN1 shown to be involved in the assimilation of several nitrogen and carbon sources during free-living aerobic growth and RpoN2 is involved in symbiotic nitrogen fixation; in Bradyrhizobium both RpoN1 and N2 are functional in free-living and symbiotic conditions, rpoN1 gene was regulated in response to oxygen
