Summary
This gene belongs to the Rad51 gene family whose products play a major role in homologous recombination and DNA repair. The encoded protein interacts with other proteins of this family, including Rad51b, Rad51c and Xrcc2, and plays an essential role in both DNA repair and telomere maintenance. In humans, germline mutations in this gene may be associated with predisposition to ovarian cancer. Alternative splicing of this gene results in multiple transcript variants. RefSeqs maintained independently of Annotated Genomes

These reference sequences exist independently of genome builds. Explain

These reference sequences are curated independently of the genome annotation cycle, so their versions may not match the RefSeq versions in the current genome build. Identify version mismatches by comparing the version of the RefSeq in this section to the one reported in Genomic regions, transcripts, and products above.

    Description
Transcript Variant: This variant (6, also known as Rad51d-delta8 or Trad-d1) lacks an alternate exon in the 3' region, compared to variant 1. This variant is represented as non-coding because the use of the 5'-most supported translational start codon, as used in variant 1, renders the transcript a candidate for nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD).
