Oscillatoria acuminata vis-a-vis Oxynema acuminatum
Chatchawan et al. (2012) propose the transfer of Oscillatoria acuminata (syn. Phormidium acuminatum) to the genus Oxynema as Oxynema acuminatum based on phenotypic analysis of exsiccate of type material PC 0655992 (Gomont herbarium (Herb. Crypt. Museum Paris - PC)). However, Rippka and Herdmann (1992) propose PCC strain 6304 as the type strain of Oscillatoria acuminata, and phylogenetic analysis by Chatchawan et al. of 16S rRNA data clearly distinguishes strain PCC 6304 as related to but distiinctly apart from the genus Oxynema. Consequently, the earlier taxonomic name Oscillatoria acuminata retains priority in the NCBI taxonomy database pending resolution of these contradictory proposals.
